“Join me in welcoming the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan!” 

For a flash of a moment, I thought the good guys had achieved the unachievable, dragging the top echelons of the GOP squarely back into the intellectual camp of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally-limited government, ownership-based entitlement reform, fundamental tax reform, sound money, and individual opportunity. 

It wasn’t quite that. It was the actual presumptive nominee, Mitt Romney, making a slight gaffe in introducing his choice for a vice presidential running mate. Maybe it was an intentional, subliminal signal to tea partiers and constitutional conservatives? After all, many of us would have preferred Ryan at the top of the ticket.

That said, Romney made a good choice — a great choice in fact. It was a real indication to grassroots America that the Romney camp is willing to finally engage on the big issues that matter most in this election. It’s not quite enough to say that Obama has failed, we know that. Incumbent presidents should not win reelection with persistent unemployment over 8 percent and a staggering $16 trillion in debt. Clearly Obama needs to be fired. But what are you, the Republicans, actually for?

A short message about perspective

We congratulate the Republican Presidential team of Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan for 2012. 

     With all of the frantic press coverage it is difficult to remain rational about the recent campaign events, but we are asking you to remember that the image of Rep. Ryan as an "extreme conservative" is being manufactured (by the press) as we speak. In the one camp, it is because they want to attack him as a radical extremist. In the other camp, the "handlers" want to show how conservative they can be. Call me skeptical.

     Please recall the events of last year's "budget battle," where the debate ranged from ultra-conservative (slashing federal spending by 35 - 40% and eliminating entire federal departments) to moderate (Cut/Cap/Balance), to the very "prudent" Ryan Plan, which calls for gradual reductions in (future) scheduled budget increases, relying (once again) on inflationary pressures and anticipated GDP growth to reduce the deficit. While none of these plans made it close to the senate floor, the Ryan Plan is now being described as "radical" and "extreme."

     Somehow then, this translates into a "conservative victory" with the selection of Paul Ryan for Vice President. Please don't misunderstand! We welcome the very effective addition to the Romney ticket, but just as Romney was not a "tea party choice," Paul Ryan is Gov. Romney's concession to conservatives. His selection makes voting for Romney more palatable, but does nothing to insure real changes in government (that will require "keeping their feet to the fire").

     So, when you're celebrating tomorrow night (and Tuesday night) with your Republican friends, remember that, once again, the (national) choices that would further the true reclamation and restoration of "First Principles" have been removed from the table and we will be forced to work with what we are provided by media and party elites. We have much more work to do.

The Con$ultant Cla$$ #tcot

A few weeks ago I wrote this about the GOP’s consultant class:

can I just say what a bunch of charlatans and grifters most GOP consultants are. We have all these GOP Super PACs sucking up millions and millions of dollars to help Mitt Romney and now in the summer lull? Nothing. But I bet some consultants are getting rich. It’s like the GOP consultant class learned all the wrong lessons from Bob Shrum.

I await the GOP getting Brian Terry’s family on film to respond to the ridiculous Priorities USA advertisement that Romney killed some guy’s wife.

In the meantime, the GOP Super PAC ads continue to be mostly forgettable while the Super PAC’s themselves continue to raid the pockets of GOP multi-millionaires.

Now add two more data points.

David Dewhurst of Texas spent $25 million of his own money to lose badly to an upstart named Ted Cruz who only a year ago was polling at 3% in the polls. It was reminiscent of Charlie Crist’s collapse.

Last night in Missouri, Todd Akin, a man with a congressional record with much to go after, beat John Brunner. Brunner spent $8 million.

Note to GOP multi-millionaires: when consultants are circling you, plying you with compliments, and telling you how awesome you are, understand that what is going on is that you are roadkill and they are vultures. They will pick your carcass clean.

Also, the rest of us should understand that Democrat multi-millionaires seem to do quite well in electoral politics. What’s the difference? More often than not, they are running because they believe in a cause. Most Republican multi-millionaires seem to run because they believe in themselves.

Causes always translate better with voters than egos do.

Sports Versus Politics

   It has long seemed to me that there is far more rationality in sports, and in commentaries on sports, than there is in politics and in commentaries on politics. What has puzzled me is why this is so, when what happens in politics has far more serious effects on people's lives.
   To take one common example, there are many people who believe that if the market fails, the government should step in. But, if Robinson Cano strikes out, does anyone suggest that the Yankees should send in a pinch hitter for him on his next time at bat?
   Everyone understands that a pinch hitter can also strike out, and is less likely than Cano to get a hit or a home run. But the very possibility that the government can fail when it steps in to substitute for a failing market seldom occurs to many people. Even among some economists, "market failure" is a magic phrase that implies a need for government intervention.
   We could argue about the empirical evidence as to when government pinch-hitting is better or worse. But there is seldom even an argument at all in some quarters, where government intervention follows market failure as the night follows the day.
   Milton Friedman once pointed out, "A system established largely to prevent bank panics produced the most severe banking panic in American history." Many other examples could be cited where government intervention made a bad situation worse.

THE SOCIALIST BEHIND ROMNEYCARE #tcot

A new report from researcher Trevor Loudon names one of the main architects of Romneycare in Massachusetts as a member of an international socialist movement. John E. McDonough, a former Ted Kennedy staffer who also played a significant role in passing Obamacare, is identified by Loudon as a former chair of the Boston chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a pro-Marxist group that is affiliated with the Socialist International.

McDonough is now a professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Loudon is the blogger from New Zealand who broke the stories of Frank Marshall Davis being Obama’s communist mentor, and Van Jones having a communist background after his appointment as Obama’s “Green Jobs Czar.”

Loudon’s new report, which is potentially embarrassing to Mitt Romney as he tries to prove his conservative credentials, is headlined, “How DSA Marxists Influenced Health Policies for Both Major Presidential Candidates.”

McDonough acknowledged to AIM, “…between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, I was a member of (first), the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, and then Democratic Socialists of America as it became in the early 1980s. I left the group in 1982 or 1983. I also served as chair of the Boston chapter for a couple of years.”

NEW CONSERVATIVE FILM DOWNPLAYS OBAMA'S MARXISM #tcot

The new conservative film, “Obama’s America: 2016,” offers a lot of good information but muddies the waters as Americans, during this critical election year, look outside the major media for information about their President.

Instead of educating people about communist influence over Obama, an unprecedented and shocking development for an American president, filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza claims that “anti-colonialism,” a philosophy exploited by communists, is behind his beliefs and policies.

The critical fact about the cause of anti-colonialism, ignored in the film, is that it was a tactic of the international communist movement, which attempted to create the Soviet Union’s own colonial empire.

This omission is strange, since D’Souza’s film touts his work for President Ronald Reagan, who fought the communists in Hollywood and confronted the Soviet “evil empire,” leading to the collapse of the system and the independence of countries formerly under its control.

Oscar-winning producer Gerald R. Molen, who has produced several films for Steven Spielberg, also worked on the D’Souza project and has been quoted as saying that he intended “Obama’s America: 2016” to be an effort to depict the decline of America and its influence under Obama.
