In a move that's already stoking concerns among voters, Pennsylvania election officials are notifying the public not to expect results from the high-stakes presidential race on Election Night. This announcement is raising eyebrows and suspicions, especially in a pivotal battleground state.
The Keystone State is under intense scrutiny this election cycle, with both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump prioritizing visits. Harris made a stop on August 18 ahead of the Democratic National Convention, while Trump held rallies on August 17 and August 19, highlighting his enduring popularity despite the chaos and alleged violence surrounding him.
To prevent a repeat of controversies from four years ago, Republican Secretary of State Al Schmidt – an appointee of Democrat Governor Josh Shapiro – has been candid about current state laws. Pennsylvania law bars county boards from processing mail-in ballots until 7 a.m. on Election Day. This delay is stirring concerns over potential election irregularities.
"It's absurd that states like Florida and Texas manage to count their votes promptly, but Pennsylvania drags its feet," Scott Pressler, a well-known conservative activist, remarked. Pennsylvania and states like Wisconsin, where pre-canvassing is prohibited, are ripe for election night chaos and controversy.
The 2020 debacle, triggered by Act 77 – signed by Democratic Governor Tom Wolf – opened the floodgates for widespread mail-in voting without requiring excuses. Originally intended to aid those with legitimate reasons, the act's loose provisions, coupled with the COVID-19 surge, have fundamentally altered Pennsylvania's voting landscape.
In the 2022 gubernatorial race, over 1.2 million Pennsylvanians opted to vote by mail, a trend that seems far from waning. Mail-in ballot applications are accessible much earlier now, giving more time to voters – but also more time for potential loopholes.
Schmidt has been advocating for legislative changes to allow precanvassing before Election Day. Despite his efforts, the Republican-controlled state Senate remains at odds with the Democratic state House over the specifics.
Republicans have been vocal about the need for election integrity. Pressler has been pushing Shapiro to enact executive orders ensuring non-citizens are not on voter rolls. Instances in Virginia and Ohio where thousands of non-citizens were found on voter rolls underline the urgency of these measures.
The turnover in election administrators since the chaotic 2020 cycle is alarming. Over 80 senior election positions have seen new faces since then, raising concerns about readiness and consistency. The state insists on providing sufficient mail-in and in-person ballots, yet past mishaps, such as Luzerne County running out of ballots in 2022, cast doubt.
Schmidt, the lone Republican among Philadelphia's commissioners during the contentious 2020 election, has tried to dispel fears of non-citizen voting. But with the administration's back-and-forth over upgrading the antiquated SURE system, reassurances ring hollow for many skeptics. The contract cancellation for a new voter roll system last December only adds to the suspicions.
The Shapiro administration's various initiatives, from training new election directors to establishing a threat task force, are seen as attempts to bolster confidence. Yet, the specter of another chaotic Election Night in such a critical state remains a legitimate concern for many voters keen on ensuring a free, fair, and timely election.
